Roanoke, VA (October 21, 2013) The BBB Serving Western Virginia is reporting a record turnout for their biannual ‘Secure Your ID’ document shredding event held October 19, 2013 at the Salem Civic Center. BBB served a record 313 vehicles, which resulted in 21,384 lbs of shredded personal documents.
“We are proud of how many folks participated and secured their personal documents. Unfortunately, we had to turn some people away as the tremendous turnout filled the trucks to capacity,” said Julie Wheeler, President and CEO of BBB Serving Western VA. “We greatly apologize to anyone who was not able to participate because of the heavy attendance. Because of this great response, we plan to add additional shredding vehicles for our next event in April. We want to offer this service to as many residents as possible, and will take steps to ensure everyone who attends in April has their documents shredded.”
The BBB has been hosting the biannual event since 2008. BBB’s from across North America join in on the event designed to protect consumers from the growing threat of identity theft. Consumers and businesses are encouraged each April and October to attend this free community service event and properly shred and destroy sensitive documents using industrial shredders supplied by Cintas. BBB staff members also attend each event to provide advice and tips for identity theft protection.
With a new victim of identity theft coming every three seconds, taking a few minutes to shred paper documents could save a consumer from becoming another statistic. Fifty-six percent of identity theft victims traced the theft to something that was stolen from their own possession.
The BBB will once again host the Secure Your ID event in April of 2014, date to be determined in the coming weeks. The BBB thanks its partners for their support during the 2013 Secure Your ID event. They include: Blue Ridge Copier, WSLS 10, Cintas Document Management, and the Salem Civic Center.
