BBB Serving Western Virginia, in partnership with WSLS News Channel 10, First Team Auto Mall, and CINTAS Document Management, was pleased to provide its first “Secure Your ID” Day on September 20. BBB was able to provide this free service to almost 300 vehicles. Consumers from across the Roanoke Valley attended “Secure Your ID” Day, resulting in 10,760 pounds of personal documents being destroyed.
On a national level, nearly 13,000 vehicles descended on 83 sites across the U.S. and Canada on Saturday, September 20, all filled with boxes and bags of sensitive documents to be shredded free of charge during Better Business Bureau’s second “Secure Your ID” Day community service event.
BBB and its leading partners Equifax, ProQuo and National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) saw consumers and small business owners from 30 states and two provinces deliver more than 710,000 pounds (355 tons) of materials for safe, responsible destruction, making BBB “Secure Your ID” Day the largest single day event of its kind ever held.
“BBB and our partners are providing identity theft prevention solutions for consumers and business owners with easy-to-use services and programs like BBB “Secure Your ID” Day,” said Steve Cole, president and CEO for the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “None of us can afford to take a passive approach to identity theft – the issue requires action. BBB plans to continue helping communities guard against ID theft with more products, services and programs in the future.”
At BBB’s first “Secure Your ID” Day event in May, more than 500,000 pounds (250 ton) of sensitive documents were responsibly disposed of at 54 sites across the U.S. and Canada. The September event saw a 54 percent increase in communities served and a 44 percent increase in tonnage of materials shredded from the May event.
Education is one of the most important ways BBB works toward building trust in today’s marketplace. Going forward, BBB plans to continue providing expert advice to protect consumers and business owners from the ongoing threat of ID theft through a variety of offerings.
